Bedazzled Bespectacled

Grade 3 for Mom,
Grade 5 for Dad,
Grade 2 for Serena:
those dreadful glasses.

Actually it's not dreadful at all for Serena; she thinks it rather fashionable. To be fair, hers are not exactly like her parents. Yes, they're more stylish but they're also reading glasses, i.e. she only wears them for reading. Serena is diagnosed with "convergence insufficiency" and the glasses help relieve eye strain during reading. It also makes her look more scholarly, doesn't it?

Transit of Venus

We were at the H.R. Macmillan Space Centre on Tuesday to witness this astronomical event that occurs every 243 years. The weather didn't cooperate for our fair city so instead of watching the transit from our own GMS Observatory, we watched a live feed from fairer places like Hawaii. Scientists could apply the transit times in some fancy mathematical model to extrapolate the size of our solar system. Very cool stuff!

* Check out this Astronomy Picture of the Day for an awesome video of the transit of Venus.

Gone Fishing

While Mom got stuck inside a convention hall, Dad and Serena went fishing at the Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery in Abbotsford. At the visitor centre, they learned all about fish identification, habitat, conservation, tackle and accessories, etc., and they met a 20-year old sturgeon named Doug. Serena caught her first trout ("It's the biggest one!") as soon as her fishing line went in the water, giving her a very misguided notion that it takes no time to catch a fish...
