Garbage Garbage Everywhere

Where oh where does our garbage go?

We uncovered the mystery at the Vancouver Landfill where they recently had an open house of its 420-hectare site in Delta.

It was mighty fun to have the rare chance to climb on the actual landfill equipments. We were most fascinated though by the hawks and falcons. Raptor Ranch Bird of Prey Centre was there to explain and demonstrate how they use their trained raptors for bird control at the landfill. The garbage attracts tons of sea gulls and eagles. Working with their handlers, the harris hawks and other raptors are great patrols to keep the sea gulls from gorging themselves sick or interfering with the daily operations on site.

After a very informative 30-minute guided bus tour of the landfill, we had our free hamburgers and hotdogs, and Serena made some crafts out of recycled materials. Before we left, we put Serena to work to shuffle our free bag of compost to take home.

Now we know garbage doesn't just magically disappear from our garbage cans every week. Seeing the massive mountains of trash and understanding the extensive operations required to process the garbage while minimizing damage to the environment reminds us of the importance to reduce, reuse, and recycle!
