Who Wants to Play Patient?
Serena can now speak quite eloquently on the 4 steps of pediatric respiratory physical exam: inspect, palpate, percuss, and auscultate. It's not hard to remember those steps after being inspected, palpated, percussed, and auscultated by 15 different aspiring doctors!
The UBC Clinical Skills teaching sessions are designed to help medical students learn "History Taking" and "Physical Examination" skills. It wouldn't be very effective to run these hands-on sessions without actual "patients" to practice on - hence the Volunteer Patient Program.
Serena has played patient twice so far at 2 different hospitals with 2 different groups of eager 1st year med students. It was a fun experience and also interesting to get a glimpse of what doctors go through before they get their MD initials. It was quite amusing to see some of them taking out their spanking new stethoscopes out of a box, and one doctor-to-be managed to put it on backwards. Good for Serena to see that we all start somewhere!
