Block Party Band Performance

Serena had a few jam sessions with Mrs. Khoo's Brass Wind & Wire band this summer. They livened up the afternoon at a Richmond block party where Mayor Malcolm Brodie was part of the audience.

Many adult players in the band have only been playing their instruments for a year or so. The musicians range from 10 to 70's, it's truly a wonderful community band!

Bookbag, pocketshoe, bookbag, pocketshoe

Serena, what's so good about this book that you read it in one sitting??

I think the way the author Rebecca Stead illustrated the friendships between the characters in the story is great. The way that everything is inter-related, from the crazy man sleeping under the mailbox to the "$20,000 Pyramid", it's simply brilliant.

I also really liked how she showed the complexity of time travel - like how if you go back in time and arrive back to your own time five minutes before you left, you would see yourself before you left and vice versa - such as in Madeleine L'Engle's "A Wrinkle In Time", a book that captivated Rebecca Stead.

The book also asks impossible questions like: Can someone know things that have not yet happened? Can common sense confuse things more? Is it possible not to recognize your future self? Read When You Reach Me and find out what "bookbag, pocketshoe" means!

Lights

Sweet Star, of beauty bright
Why must you flee into the night?
Why cloak yourself in dark
At the sound of little lark?

Dear Moon, of face like snow
Why your cool light you shan’t bestow?
Why must you leave my sight
When the Morning’s rays take flight?

Cruel Sun, of heart like fire
Why must you of your sister tire?
Why shunt her far away
Can you not live in peace one day?

Can lights like yours not mingle?
To light my humble shingles?
Or t’wards entities as such
Does a young girl ask too much?

Tri-It Triathlon 2015

I recently did a Tri-It Triathlon in Templeton - my 4th year in a row. The swimming and running were pretty uneventful, but the cycling was amazing!

I borrowed a racing bike from my Daddy's friend and WOW did it make a difference! I shaved at least 4 minutes which really is a lot for a triathlon. Last year I came in 8th out of 21 girls and 23rd out of 41 kids. This year I came in 4th out of 30 girls and 12th out of 60 kids. It was really fun doing the race then cheering on the next person!
The medals were really gorgeous this year. After you finished the race you got a medal, a mini freezy, and a water bottle. Then you could go to the snack counter to get a juice box or granola bar, and go to the toy table to pick a little prize!

Over all it was a really fun experience - cheering my friends on, giving high-fives to the runners, and clearing the sidewalks for the runners. It was fantastic!

Demo Team at the Night Market

Serena and her Taekwondo Demonstration Team friends were invited to perform at the Richmond Night Market a few times this summer.  They had fun showing off their performance routines but I think what they enjoyed the most was grabbing bubble tea & hurricane potatoes at the market after!
